Preparing for a job hunt is complicated. There are so many variables to address and getting just one wrong can prevent you from getting the job you want. Updating your resume, searching for open jobs and preparing for interviews – how do you know if you are on the right track? Start by asking yourself – Would I Hire Me?
Do I have the background I need?
Are my expectations realistic? Assess the jobs you are interested in and determine if you are truly qualified for the positions. If your qualifications and expectations don’t match, you have two choices – downgrade the types of jobs you apply to, or take the necessary steps to qualify for the jobs you prefer. Consider obtaining additional education or certifications or working contract jobs to increase your experience.
Is my experience specific enough?
Does the employer require industry-specific experience or do you have technical or other skills that can serve more than one industry? Make sure that your certifications are up-to-date. When you analyze job postings, prepare yourself to point out how your experience is relevant to the job at hand.
Does my resume present me in the best light?
It doesn’t matter if you are the most qualified applicant if your resume does not articulate your desirability to employers. Hit industry keywords so that you won’t be computer-screened out, but don’t stop there. Use action words and cite specific accomplishments and statistics where possible and please – have someone else review your resume.
Am I interview ready?
Things can happen fast in the job market – make when you get the call for an interview with a key company. Start with your suit. It should be clean and pressed, shoes shined. Thoroughly research the company online so that you can ask intelligent questions. Be prepared to answer typical interview questions in your industry. Have your “elevator pitch” polished and be ready to share specific examples of your accomplishments.
