How to Know You Need a New IT Job

Everyone has an occasional bad day/week/month on the job. And few people are perfectly happy with their employer or position. But, how do you know when you’re just experiencing normal workplace frustrations versus when you actually need to pursue a new IT job? Here are three clear signs it’s time to move on:

You See No Opportunity for Career Growth

It’s unreasonable to expect a promotion a week after starting. In many cases, a chance to move up does not present itself for a matter of years. But, with time and patience, there is the expectation that you will be able to advance within a company, or at the very least, develop new skills. If, however, you have been passed over for promotions or your supervisor seems entrenched in his position, it leads to the dispiriting feeling that you’re stuck in place. That’s a strong indicator your current job is a roadblock to your long-term career growth. Look for an opportunity elsewhere where you have the opportunity to become something more.

Your Company is Not Adequately Committed to Tech

There are few companies that make use exclusively of cutting-edge technologies and the very best hardware/software in all instances. But, there is the expectation that today’s companies will acknowledge the vital importance of tech and make the necessary investments in staff and resources. If your company tries to get by with ancient equipment and outdated processes, it suggests they don’t value IT as much as they should, which means they don’t value you. Go work for a company that understands your importance and gives you the resources you need to make an impact.

You Feel Manipulated and Tricked

All professionals will need to evolve and adapt as their companies change. That is a lot different than doing a job completely disparate than the one you thought you were being offered. You may have been asked to take on widely different responsibilities than the job advertised for, or take on the work of departed employees without being offered more compensation. In either case, you feel like you got the bait and switch. That shows an extreme lack of respect on the part of your employer and likely indicates a pattern that will repeat itself again. Find a company that is excited to treat you honestly and fairly just like you treat others.

If you have concluded you need a new IT job, the prospect of starting a full-scale job search can seem especially daunting. Make things easier on yourself by working with The Squires Group.
