3 Employee Engagement Tips for Cyber Security Staff

The importance of employee engagement is only now starting to be fully understood. In the past, companies felt that offering compensation and occasional perks was enough to keep employees engaged. They then wondered why productivity plateaued, innovation dried up, and turnover became epidemic. The simple fact is that the more time and resources you invest in employee engagement, the more you will get out of your staff – the lifeblood of your organization. Below, we’ve listed three tips that work particularly well for keeping cyber security professionals engaged.

Make the Most of Your Performance Evaluations

Your staff probably has a number of strengths, skills, and interests that they don’t get to use at work. During your next performance evaluation, try to determine what those are. Then, as much as possible, evolve the staff member’s job responsibilities to make better use of their core talents. When people are engaged in work that they enjoy and feel good at, they will naturally work harder and feel more loyal to their employer.

Treat People as Individuals, Not Equals

Mangers have a tendency to be extremely diplomatic and treat everyone on their staff as perfect equals. And while this approach is good for some things, it can actually compromise employee engagement. The truth is that your staff are not all equals. Some people turn in a stellar performance day in and day out while others simply coast by. When you treat everyone the same, you discourage your top performers and give those at the bottom a false sense of accomplishment. Identify those people who go above and beyond and single them out for special praise or rewards.

Offer Opportunities for Professional Development

Cyber security in particular is a field that is in an almost-constant state of flux. You can increase employee engagement and build a stronger staff by making professional development accessible and affordable. Give your staff time to attend conferences and lectures. Offer tuition reimbursement for taking classes or picking up certifications. Make sure that everyone has the tech tools they need to stay on the cutting edge. When you encourage people to become better at their jobs and make it easy for them to hone their skills, they typically rise to the call and voluntarily become more invested in their work.

Another way you can promote engagement is by refining your recruiting strategy. If you look for candidates who have shown a history of loyalty and professional commitment, you can bet they will bring those traits to their new job.  Find more of these engaged cyber security professionals by working with the team at The Squires Group
