  • Multi-State Payroll

The Challenge

Our client turned to the recruiting and staffing experts at The Squires Group because they had an urgent need for a Payroll Specialist with both multi-state and large institutional experience. Over the prior 15 year period, their outgoing Payroll Specialist had put together most of the company’s payroll policies and procedures. However, these policies and procedures were in dire need of updating and were not clearly documented in many instances.

Since the Payroll Specialist had already moved on to their new job, the challenge for our expert staffing and recruiting team was to quickly find a talented candidate who could hit the ground running – and independently set up the newly refreshed payroll policies and procedures.

Additionally, the ideal candidate would be comfortable working in a fast paced environment and possess strong “team player” attributes.

The Solution

Through an in-depth client discussion, our senior recruiting and talent acquisition team established the critical skills and fit factors needed to identify the ideal candidate. As a next step, our team put in motion a high priority recruiting plan which included activating our local and national network of Accounting and Finance professionals. Within seven days, we identified a strong candidate who was a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) with over 20 years of payroll experience. Their experience included payroll expertise for a large institutional client. In addition, our candidate offered more than 15 years’ experience with multi-state payroll tax, wage garnishments/adjustments and payroll bank reconciliations. As an added bonus, they had also been processing bi-weekly payroll for up to 3,500 employees. Finally, our candidate was energized by our client’s high performance culture and had demonstrated success in a managerial role.

The Success

After several rounds of interviews with the key decisions makers, our candidate was selected by the client. Since they joined our client, they have proven to be a positive addition to the team, as well as their accounting department. After a brief orientation period, they quickly prioritized the areas in payroll that needed a refresh on policies, procedures and documentation. They were also able to bring all payroll bank reconciliations current and balanced. As a testimony to their success, the payroll team and the accounting department are now functioning as a strongly unified team.
